Shadow Reading
In this drill, learners will be reading at a specific rate. This reading drill is different from the others because it requires them to listen and follow along.

Learners will need two things:
-
any text around their level
-
an audio/video recording of the text*.
Shadow Reading Steps:
1) Listen to the text (do not look at the reading)
2) Listen again and silently follow along
3) Listen again (third time) and speak the text
4) Silently read the text
5) Orally read the text
(Some recommend repeating steps three through five periodically throughout the day)

To be most effective, after each step check learners comprehension. They can check comprehension by recalling at least one main idea or organizational feature.

* if they do not have recorded texts, try listening to a TED talk and using the transcript. They do not need to do the full talk. Try two or three minutes to start with. Go to TED Talks. Find "show transcript" and choose English.
