How can I increase my learners' reading fluency?
Reading fluently is much more than reading fast. Fluent readers read at appropriate rates with adequate comprehension and are metacognitively aware of their reading process. You can help your learners increase their fluency by helping them . . .
-
learn about the four purposes for reading
-
increase their reading rate
-
develop reading comprehension skills
-
create reading self-awareness (metacognition)
Remember that takes A LOT OF TIME AND PRACTICE for readers to become fluent!

How can I help my learners read critically?
Critical readers read academic texts with the intent to analyze, and synthesize. They then integrate this information with what they hear and what they already know. Learning about discourse markers, organizational strategies, and how to write effective paraphrases and summaries will help learners to read critically.
What are some general academic skills that can help my readers?
Many learners struggle with the academic load of lecture, readings, assingments, quizes, exams, and essays. Learners can greatly benefit from learning basic time management skills.
Additionally, many ESL learners struggle with academic text use. Many are unaware how to correctly cite, paraphase, and summarize the material they are integrating. Learning how to correctly cite information will help learners avoid the issue of text misuse and misrepresentation (palagarism).
