General Academic Skills
What are some general academic skills that can help my readers?
Learners can greatlly benefit from managing their time. Academic reading alone is very demanding, and many learners find it hard to stay on top of lecture, assingments, reading, and exams. Learners may lack the knowledge or motivation to mangage their time. These learners will benefit from the skills described here.
Understanding citations and references can also be difficult for ESL learners. Most often, the information gained from their readings and lecture will be used to complete writing tasks, like an essay or short-answer exam, a reading response, or a research paper. This requires learners to not only integrate multiple sources in their writing, but also to correctly cite or reference these sources. Learners can avoid the issue of text misuse and misrepresentation (palagarism) by learning the originality steps from the critical reading section, understanding the different citaiton styles, and connecting with online citation resources.
Time managment is a critical for adacdemic learning. By managing their time, learners can become a self-motivated or self-directed learner, and will see an increase in their academic success. They will also have a higher grade-point average (GPA), experience less anxiety and stress, are able to adapt to the university culture, and can participate in extracurricular activities.
Understanding citations and references can be difficult. There are many different styles for citations, such as MLA, APA, and Chicago. This will connect your learners with information about "the basics" for each style as well as link them to other citation resoures.
