Reading with Purpose
Why is it important for my learners to have a 'purpose' for reading?
The most effective and efficient readers set a goal or purpose before they read. With this purpose readers are able to make strategic adjustments to their fluency to match their purpose (Grabe & Stoller, 2001, 2014). In academic reading their are four general categories:
Each of these purposes are important to understand because they determine how the learners read, what strategy they will use, and at what rate they will read. Meaning, these purposes help learners become active and strategic as they increase their reading awareness. Additionally, learners who understand their purpose for reading have higher motivation and comprehension (Anderson, 2014). Though greater emphasis has been placed on the categories of reading to learn and reading to integrate as suggested by Grabe and Stoller (2011), all four categories of academic reading should be discussed and understood.
