Rate Push-Down

For this drill learners will repeatedly read a chunk of material. The goal of this drill is to simply read the same material a little faster each time they reread. Learners will need two things:

  • a text around their reading level

  • a 60-second (or one-minute) timer

Rate Push-Down Steps:

1) Set the timer for 60 seconds or one minute

2) Read for one minute and mark where they end

3) Check their comprehension and calculate their reading speed or rate

4) Reread the SAME material, but in 50 seconds and check their comprehension

5) Reread the SAME material a third time in 40 seconds and check their comprehension

6) Reread the SAME material a fourth time in 30 seconds and check their comprehension

7) Read new material, timing themselves for 60 seconds

8) Check their reading rate and comprehension

*Learners should be faster, meaning they should be able to cover more material in the new section.
