Paced Reading
For this drill learners will read marked amounts of text for five to seven minutes. Each minute learners should try to read according to their marked goal. Learners will need two things:
-
a text around their reading level
-
a 60-second (or one-minute) timer *They may also have a friend be their one-minute timer

Paced Reading Steps:
1) Set a reading rate goal and mark the text according to their goal (for example, if their goal was 180 wpm, they would place a mark every 180 words in the text)
2) Read the text for at least five to seven minutes
3) Have a timer go off every minute, or have a friend let them know each time a minute passes
4) At each minute, wither or not they have finished reading their marked section, move forward to the next section
5) At the end, evaluate whether or not they met their goals and make adjustments
*This can also be done as a "class-paced" reading, using a class reading goal.
